Student Judge of Election Information

Will County has participated in students serving as judges of election since it became law in 2000. It has served to be a successful and rewarding experience for students.  In order to qualify, you must:

1.  Be able to read, write and speak English;

 2.  Be a U.S. Citizen;

 3.  Be a high school senior in good standing;

4.  Have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;

5.  Have the written approval of the principal of your high school and your parent;

6.  Successfully complete the State required training session;

7.  Be able to work on Election Day beginning at 5:30 a.m. until after the polls close when all duties are completed.

The law does not require a student to be a registered voter.

 Judges of Election are responsible for the proper and legal conduct of the election.  They are required to maintain order in the polling place throughout the election day.  Responsibilities include organizing the polling place, verifying voter’s eligibility, and processing the ballots, and returning ballots and supplies to designated stations.  Student Judges have the same responsibilities, duties and authority as other election judges.

A student judge is paid the same salary as other judges of election, which is $90.00 base pay and $45.00 additional for attending the required training session.

This is a challenging, interesting and a personally rewarding experience.  If you are interested in serving as a student judge, contact your school principal or the Will County Clerk’s office at 815/740-4617.
